First food - Banana!

We've decided to go with the baby-led weaning (or baby-led solids) method of introducing solid food to Avery.  If you want more info just click on the link, but basically it entails giving Avery appropriately sized pieces of whatever healthy food we are eating and letting him experiment with feeding himself and decide what he does and doesn't want to eat.  Breastmilk is still supposed to be his main source of nutrition until he is a year old, so at this age he is just practicing - developing the skills he needs to eat and enjoying being part of the family at meal times.
My Mom was so excited that Avery finally got to eat food and since my Grandma was also visiting,  my Mom asked if he could have his first food at her house. So on Thursday I took Avery and my computer (so his Grammy in London could also witness, via Skype, his first adventure with food) to my parent's house to introduce him to the chosen food - banana.  We put him in the high chair and put on a bib (which just gets in the way, actually) and gave him the pieces of banana.... and waited.
We didn't have to wait too long because he already puts everything in his mouth, so in went the banana.  He was surprised to find out that this "banana" thing had such a strong taste!  All the wood, plastic, and fabric things he has been putting in his mouth so far have been pretty bland or tasteless, I assume.  So when he tasted the banana, he made some funny faces!  He kept looking at all of us, who were just sitting there watching him!  I don't think he actually ate very much of the banana but it was ok for a first try.

We gave him banana again today (Saturday) and it went pretty much the same way.  Mostly he just mushes the banana in his hands.  It's difficult for him to get a piece in his mouth but even when he does, he isn't sure what to do with it.  However, this is all about exploration for him and that's what he's doing. Here is a video of him eating the banana on day 2.
The video is long, but you can just watch the first few minutes if you want.  The second half of the video is after the banana - playing with toys (Noel has a tendency of just letting the video camera run and I didn't bother to edit it because the grandparents might like to watch the whole thing).
I'm looking forward to him trying his next food!

  1. I'm glad you left it long. It was a lot of fun to watch.
